CPAP Machine Review: Goodknight CPAP

Those who suffer from a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea may elect to use a CPAP machine.  Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) happens when an obstruction in the upper airway during sleep causes a person to have periods of breathing disturbances.  These respiratory disturbances cause oxygen levels to dip repeatedly during the night and can cause sleep disruption that keeps you from feeling rested the next day.  Over time, untreated OSA can lead to high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease and sexual dysfunction.

Using a CPAP machine is the most effective way to treat obstructive sleep apnea.  This may not be as simple as it sounds.  Compliance can be a problem for many users and finding a CPAP machine that meets your needs is important.

Puritan Bennett makes a CPAP machine called the Goodknight 420 CPAP system.  It is small and lightweight, making it very easy to pack when you travel.   So small it is practically invisible on your night stand.   Sleeping can be easier than usual for both the patient and the bed partner because this system is very quiet.

The pressures on this unit range from 4 – 20 cm and its features are user friendly.

The GoodKnight 420 CPAP System is available in three models:

GoodKnight 420G is an entry level unit and provides adequate therapy in a quiet manner.

GoodKnight 420S is a model that records compliance which can be useful for reporting to your insurance carrier for payment.  It is a more sophisticated unit which detects respiratory events and reports on these events so that pressure changes can be made without a need for an additional sleep study.

GoodKnight 420E is the most advanced unit.  It is auto titrating, meaning that it adjusts pressures throughout the night as needs may fluctuate due to position changes or stage of sleep.

In summary, the GoodKnight CPAP machine series is a lightweight and compact unit with user friendly options.  It is “whisper-quiet”.   Reporting options on the advanced units are of great benefit to the home care provider as well as the physician and patient, especially with the new Medicare guidelines pertaining to compliance.

Lastly, the GoodKnight CPAP can be used with both adult and pediatric patients.
