Disadvantages of a CPAP Machine – Part 1
A CPAP machine is the single most effective treatment for sleep apnea. Many users have no problems and using their CPAP machine is a breeze. For others, there may be several problems that develop along the way.
Here are some of the problems that sufferers of sleep apnea may have while using their CPAP machine:
1. Claustrophobia – If you feel as if the mask you are wearing is causing you to feel claustrophobic, try wearing it during the day while sitting and watching TV. Maybe take a nap with it on. Wearing your CPAP mask and using your CPAP machine a little each day will help the anxiety of putting it on at bedtime
2. Nasal congestion – Air coming out of a CPAP machine is dry. It is worse during the winter months when you have your heat on. This can cause sneezing, stuffiness, runny nose or even bleeding from the nose. Using heated humidity can help with these symptoms. Most CPAP machines come already equipped with a humidifier. But, if yours did not, you can always add one on.
3. A poorly fitted mask – CPAP masks come in a variety of shapes and sizes. You may need a full face mask because you are a mouth breather, or nasal pillows to lessen a claustrophobic feeling. There are also nasal masks available and all of these masks are made by a variety of manufacturers.
Your mask should “float” on your face. It should not have to be strapped down so tightly that it leaves marks. On the flip side, it should keep a seal and not leak out air. It defeats the purpose of finding a set pressure to hold your airway open if the air is leaking out around the mask.
It is vital that your CPAP mask fit you properly. Your medical equipment provider or sleep disorders specialist should be able to help you find the mask that is best for you. Most major manufacturers have a thirty day trade in policy so that you can try as many masks as you need to get the right one. That is how important it is.
There will be other problems and disadvantages of CPAP machines discussed in Part 2 of this article which will be posted in a few days.
