CPAP Mask Comfort: Tips for Getting Used to a CPAP Mask

If you have sleep apnea, you will most likely be prescribed a CPAP machine with a CPAP mask.  Sometimes lifestyle changes will alleviate the symptoms, but, if not, your physician will want you to wear CPAP because it is the most effective treatment.

A CPAP machine is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device delivered to you via a CPAP mask.  It may be physically and emotionally difficult to adapt to using a CPAP mask.  This is a common trend among most users.  There are many measures to try to help with the problems you may face.  Over time, you will adjust to it.

Find the right mask for you

Due to the many types of CPAP masks and the number of sizes for each, it is very important to find what works best for you.  One size does not fit all.  Many manufacturers of CPAP masks offer a 30 day program that allows you to exchange your mask during that time without additional charge.  They realize how important it is to find the best mask for you.

You will have the choice of nasal pillows, a nasal mask or a full-face mask.  Ask your Durable Medical Equipment Supplier to explain the advantages and/or disadvantages of each.

It is only a matter of time

Becoming adjusted to wearing a CPAP mask takes longer for some than others.  Don’t give up!!  The benefits will be tremendous.

One strategy to use is to wear the mask during the day for brief periods of time…WHILE AWAKE.  After this seems comfortable to you, add the hose and, lastly, the machine with the pressure turned on.  Once you are used to it, you can begin wearing your CPAP at night when you sleep.

If you notice a dry mouth or nose, adjust your humidity level or use a nasal steroid.  When skin irritation is a problem, wash the mask and your face nightly.  Make sure the mask is not too tight.  It should sit lightly on your face.  If you are a mouth breather, try a full face mask or a chin strap.

Getting a restful nights sleep will improve your life dramatically.  It is worth the trial and error and effort to adjust to your CPAP mask.

  1. When I use my nose mask, I get a dry throat and feels like water trickeling down my throat and I start coughing, Why is that? Only on the left side
